Elizabeth K. Cantrell

Dr. Beth enjoys a varied career as a cellist, pedagogue and Suzuki teacher trainer. With a focus on celebrating the process of learning, Beth specializes in meeting every student where they are in the moment, developmentally, emotionally and musically. She can be heard performing throughout central VA and as principal cellist of the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra and with the WSO Chamber Players.
Current students include children as young as four as well as adult musicians in their eighties. Former students have gone on to careers in education, film, music theater, medicine, public service, engineering, mathematics, astronomy, arts administration, public media, economics, earth sciences, cello performing, and teaching.
Through her work as a registered teacher trainer for the Suzuki Association of the Americas, she has trained and mentored cello teachers throughout the United States, Latin America, and as guest faculty in Europe. She is a well-known contributor to the Suzuki Journal, and a frequent conference presenter.
Dr Beth led the SAA as Board Chair during 2019-2021, guiding the organization through a turbulent period of change and growth. She is the SAA’s representative to the International Suzuki Association’s Cello committee, which is currently tasked with reviewing and revising Suzuki Cello materials.
Her educational credentials include degrees in cello performance and Music History from the Oberlin college conservatory of Music, Florida State University, and the University of Georgia, where she was in the first cohort to graduate from its DMA program.
